Here are some curriculum updates:

Math: Next Thursday, we will have our geometry unit test. We will do the review in the workbook next week to prepare. Our next unit of study will be on place value and big numbers. The girls completed an independent musical moment on Thursday for their morning work and did a fantastic job.

Next week, we will begin having spelling lists. The girls will receive their words on Monday and have a test on Friday. We are enjoying our class novel study of James and the Giant Peach. Weekly Update

We had another great week! This group of girls is sweet and fun, and we are having a fantastic time in fourth grade. Next week, we will be preparing for our class chapel, next Friday, September 29 at 8:15 in the Lower School Assembly Room. Please attend if you are able.

I sent home a Scholastic Book order this week that is due by Wednesday, September 27 so please place your order by then if you want to order anything.

Here are some curriculum updates.

Math: We completed our first Musical Moment using the song, All You Need is Love, by The Beatles. This came home in today's Friday Folder. This activity is a fun way to mix music and math and offers an opportunity for the girls to practice computation and following directions. Next week, we will continue with the geometry unit.

We used a website called Blooket to practice math facts and the girls love it! We can use this site in class as well as for homework. Please ask your daughter which game mode is her favorite.

Language Arts: The girls are doing a great job recognizing our Wordly Wise words in their reading and conversations. We started our first novel study of the book James and the Giant Peach. This is a fun book to read together. Roald Dahl was a fabulous author who wrote with such amazing descriptive language as well as wicked sense of humor. Yesterday, the girls completed their first collaborative 3WT. They did a nice job using the three words along with something from the video about illusions. Check out their creative writing!

Weekly Update

Our first, full week of fourth grade went well! The girls have finished their swimming unit so we will start our mornings next week with the regular routine.

For the first time today, I am sending home Friday Folders. It includes some written work the girls have completed over the last several weeks. Please take a look through it, empty the folder, sign the form, and send it back in with your daughter by Tuesday.

Here are some curriculum updates:

Math: We have spent some this week discussing the various angle types: right, obtuse acute, straight, and reflex. The girls also practiced using a protractor to measure angles. Next week, we will review line types and characteristics of various polygons.

Language Arts: The girls did well learning the vocabulary words from list 1 in Wordly Wise. Today we took the quiz together to establish that routine.

We also finished our first writing lab where the girls wrote a paragraph describing themselves and included a pixelated picture. They love this project and the younger girls especially love guessing who is who.

Lastly, we finished a class read aloud of The Hundred Dresses. This a timeless story that shares messages about of bullying and discrimination in a straight forward manner. Children can learn about dealing with tough decisions like standing up for friends, fitting in, and ultimately how to show forgiveness. It is a fabulous story and encourages great class discussions. After completing the last chapter, the girls created their own dress design with a special message of compassion hidden somewhere within the design. They area very creative bunch and did a fantastic job designing their dresses

Weekly Update

Thank you for coming to Parents' Night last night. It was great to see so many people and talk about our wonderful school year. The partnership between parents and teachers is so important so I am excited to work with you this year.

This post will be brief since we just spent time together last night. I want to include the special week sign up for you here

Today was a special day because the girls officially became Fourthies. As a grade level, we discussed what it means to be the leaders of the Lower School, they signed a contract, and received their hats. We will keep the hats here so they may use them when they are a carpool helper. They may bring the caps home at the end of the year! It was a fun day.

For girls not in band, they learned about club opportunities this afternoon. After the club introduction, they completed a form with their top three choices. We will make sure they get into one of their three choices and begin next Friday, September 15.

Lastly, please click here to meet our new Lower School Counselor, Emily Lathe. She is awesome and the girls have enjoyed having a few lessons with her already!

Weekly Update - First Week

Welcome to fourth grade! Your Fourthies have had an awesome first week of school. We have worked on getting to know each other and establishing routines and expectations.

I will update this class blog each week with important reminders and curriculum updates. There are helpful links on the side of the page as well as pages with information along the top. One of the pages explains what it means to be a carpool helper. This is a leadership opportunity offered to all Fourthies. Please complete this form so we know who is able to participate and who cannot. We will start carpool helpers the week of September 11.

Your daughter's only weekend "homework" is to read the blog with an adult at home and answer the scavenger hunt question at the bottom.

I look forward to seeing you at Parents' Night next Thursday night, September 7.  This is the schedule for the evening:

  • 5:00 PM - Parent Reception in Endeavour Hall (Lower School faculty and staff will be in attendance)

  • 5:30 PM - welcome remarks by Cindy Trask, Head of School, and Annie Kapetanis, Head of Lower School and Early Childhood

  • 6:15 PM - classroom visits and presentations

Fourthies lead the Pledge of Allegiance each morning to the Lower School and raise the flag for the school and these are both leadership opportunities. We rotate through the girls so everyone will have chances to do these jobs.

I am excited for this year ahead and love this sweet group of girls already. Here are the 2023-2024 Hiscock Fourthies!
